Two toned painted china hutch makeover

Ok so this is a post that has been a bit long in the making because we picked this (extremely heavy) hutch up before the holidays.

And there it sat in the garage with Christmas wrap and bows all over the place waiting for the tree to come down, and her makeover to commence!

I think it ended up being a blessing in disguise however because it gave me WEEKS to think about paint colors and what she was going to look like. Here is the before once we used a bit of wood filler on a large scratch on the side of the hutch.

I ended up finding this peel and stick wallpaper on Amazon and I loved how subtle the gold vines and flowers would look inside the back of the hutch cabinet.

Gold hardware, of course!

The best part, we spray painted all of the hinges so the only new hardware on this piece are the knobs. They are from Home Depot.

I had some white chalk paint from forever ago in a container so I used it allover as a good primer, then two extra coats on the top.

What to do with the lower half….go super dark and moody or keep it light and kind of airy? Because the little nook this will be in already does not have a ton of light, and the wall is currently dark, I opted for team airy.

I used in Algonquin again (I know I just painted those vases that color but I can’t help it I REALLY like this color can you tell?) Fusion Mineral Paint. This stuff is good, the coverage is killer and the colors are gorgeous. I see they have 11 new colors on their website now too, that is if one was inclined to hoard paint 🙂

So, after the top and bottom were done it was time for hardware and that gorgeous wallpaper to go in. I literally could not wait to put all my favorite dishes, silver flatware and soup tureen on display. And since we have a small kitchen which has very little storage after taking the cave-like upper cabinets down (best decision ever) I have a bunch more storage space now. Just off the kitchen!

I don’t know about you but I love a good before and after. I am sure it probably all stems from slumber parties in the 80’s with 11 girls all putting makeup on each other and curling eachothers hair to put on a stunning “fashion” show while listening to Rick Springfield. Please tell me you did that too. I promise I don’t use frosty blue eyeshadow anymore and even if I did I would not put it on you, promise.

Well there you have it, I am so in love with this piece and it fits perfect in this space. Pretty painted furniture that serves as extra storage are a match made in thrifty girl heaven!

Thank you as always for reading, until next time 🙂

xo, Tanya

  1. From what I’ve seen in India, many platforms try to pack in too many features and end up being confusing to use. I recently tried https://pin-up1.in/ and it felt much more straightforward. The design is clean, and everything works without delays or unnecessary steps. You can quickly understand how it’s organized, which saves time. For users in India, it seems like a good option if you want something simple, responsive, and easy to get into without a steep learning curve.

  2. Hi again, I came across this during a random search session about India-based sites. I opened http://stake-india-in.com/ and stayed longer than I expected. The layout was easy to follow, and I didn’t feel lost at any point, which made the whole experience quite relaxed.
