Ruffled linen DIY stool slipcovers + a new hutch

Hey friend!

In order to stay patient for the tomatoes to start really producing I decided I would tend to something that was bugging me for a while.

I would like to begin by saying that I have no business with white upholstered anything in my home.

I thought I could do it, I really did. But the reality is with three teenagers, two dogs, 8 hens, a bunny and a cat (no partridge in a pear tree- yet!) my pretty Target stools were looking pretty rough in no time.

For reference, the bunny is not an indoor bunny. I am not sure why, but it seems like that is important information for you to have.

These stools were PERFECT, they fit nicely under our coffee table in our family room and we just moved them and used them when we needed more seating. We have used them a lot. And it has started to show.

Since they were a little modern for my taste anyways I have been on the lookout for a way to have them look pretty again. And, to go with the soft, crumply, cozy fabrics I have on all my throw pillows.

I first saw a wonderful tutorial by the incredibly talented Miss Mustard Seed and I loved what she did. When I recently saw what Cindy did at DIY Beautify with a bit of fabric (and a talent for sewing!) I knew the ruffle was the way to go.

I wanted to use linen so it would have that lovely lived-in look, and the sought after wrinkle that only linen can get away with.

I went thru my fabric and realized I had one lone curtain (I buy fabric this way sometimes as a long curtain is usually much more thrifty than buying fabric by the yard full price.) I remember picking this linen curtain up for $10 noting it was machine washable and figured SOMEDAY I would put it to use.

I did not use a pattern but instead used the stool and it’s measurements adding 1.5 inches extra to the circular top piece.

I added the same to the side panel and used a half inch seam allowance so the slipcover would be casual and a little slouchy.

For the ruffle I doubled the amount I used for the flat side panel and cut the ruffle pieces 4″ wide instead of 2″ that I used for the side panel. Every inch and a half or so I pinched a small fold and sewed right over the top of it. By the time I got to the end and it was time to sew the side panel ends together and the ruffle ends there was just enough to fold in and stitch together.

These were so quick to make and I love the cozy, warm, crumply look they bring to a simple footstool!

Crumply, slouchy, perfect!

And I am so excited to share my most recent vintage find, this beautiful hutch that I found on Facebook Marketplace last week!

The bottom half has doors that were detached and I decided I would leave them off and just enjoy how pretty this 100+ year old hutch is.

Sometimes we are fortunate enough to meet the person that has the story behind the find. We were in luck when we met the seller and she shared the long family history and memories surrounding it. Her grandparents were from France and Italy, married upon arriving in the states and soon after started a family. This humble hutch was built with the best wood available (fir) to the builder on a budget at the time.

In the back you can see much rougher boards were used where they would not be seen typically.

If you love history and vintage furniture like I do you will no doubt tear up when I tell you she teared up at my reaction and reassurance she would be our family’s for a very long time.

Would you ever look around your home and think that two women would meet 100 years from now over a piece of your furniture and bond immediately over it?

So, needless to say this piece is mine and I am hers.

With a new hutch to style and slipcovers to enjoy (besides the garden that is beginning to really produce) I will be busy this week and loving each moment.

I probably should not be thinking about fall decor but I cannot help myself. It’s not even August so I probably just need to enjoy this lovely summer.

And maybe pin just a few fall ideas.

And perhaps look at some fall toned crumply linens.

Just to be prepared.

Of course 🙂

Thank you so much for reading, your comments and feedback mean so much to me! I hope this finds you cozy and enjoying your home one crumply project at a time too.

xo, Tanya
