Neutral cottage style hutch makeover

Hello friends!

Would you believe I have kept this little makeover a secret as it was not quite complete until after the New Year? I shared a brief picture of it when I hung up my yarn wrapped tree garland before Christmas.

But as soon as the Christmas decor was all tucked away in the attic it was time to focus my attention on finishing this little cottage hutch makeover.

While the New Year was rung in with Flu A whipping thru our house, we took care of each other and I think we just about have eradicated it. Sans a lingering cough or two.

Recent weeks have been full of making soups, getting caught up on laundry, and focusing on one small project at a time. This week, food storage.

We cook a lot from scratch, and working from home depend on leftovers, jars of soup and homemade chili to fill tummies mid-day.

And since no meal would be complete without a crusty bread or focaccia around here, plenty of breads that seem to not only warm the body but the spirit somehow too.

I have been practicing slow living, and not racing to do anything that is non-urgent. It is amazing how much more enjoyable a clean kitchen or freshly made stock is when you take the time to enjoy the process.

January has a way of naturally slowing us down with the weather, short days, and lure of a good book and a warm blanket.

So, in the spirit of enjoying everything cozy about this time of year, I am super excited to share this before and after!

I found this hutch for a song this summer, and you may remember the sweet lady I bought it from was in tears when she realized how much I love vintage as well. Her beloved hutch would be well cared in our home, she had moved it for many years since it was passed down to her, coming originally from her grandparents, who immigrated from Italy and France to raise a family here in the US.

As we both had a couple tears in our eyes, and I wished her safe travels to her new home out of state, I decided to leave this lovely hutch as she was for a while and figure out who she is.

Well, as the months went on I decided that I would listen to my gut and give her a couple coats of a warm white paint. I immediately loved it and could not believe how much more spacious this area felt after I finished.

Next, I used a queen flat sheet in a lovely taupe and white floral pattern (Threshold from Target but I found it at Goodwill for $6.99. That made for good quality, very affordable fabric!)

I lined the upper cabinets with the fabric, then using a small tension rod on each side below, stitched a little skirt for each side.

I gathered my “vintage” brown glass bottles (aka- beer growlers with the labels removed 🙂 ) and I am loving the warm January vibes they give filled with some faux greens.

We have freezing rain and snow coming in the days ahead so we have a few things to tidy up outdoors and make sure our bunny and chickens have plenty of heat, foot and fresh water.

I hope this finds you enjoying your January too and cannot wait to share all of the projects and yummy food in the hopper with you!

Until next time, xx Tanya

  1. Tanya- love your transformation. I love how you expressed you let her be and got to know her before you transformed her. She looks great in her new party dress. Love that you use thrifted sheets too. On a side note we are totally with you making our own food over here. HNY and thanks for sharing at the Home Imagined party. XO- MaryJo

  3. What a heartwarming story behind the hutch! Loved how you took your time to finish the makeover. And that focus on slow living and enjoying the process is spot-on. I’m curious, what was the most challenging part of the cottage hutch makeover? Share more DIY deets!

  4. What a cozy transformation! I love how you’re taking things one project at a time, especially during such a busy season. It’s great to hear that you’re on the mend and spending time nurturing each other. 5. I love how January slowed everything down for you in the best way: soups simmering, bread baking, and one thoughtful project at a time. The fabric lining and those brown glass bottles are perfection. Honestly, this post feels like a pause button on life — the kind you wish you could stay in, like finding a calm stretch on Escape Road where everything just flows. Absolutely beautiful before & after.

  6. I love how this neutral cottage‑style hutch makeover shows the value of careful planning, patience, and learning a new skill step by step. That same approach applies to Help with Science GED. Instead of rushing through difficult topics, taking time to build understanding and use the right tools makes learning stick. Just like transforming a piece of furniture into something beautiful, mastering science concepts takes steady effort and the right guidance to create results you can be proud of.

  7. This makeover is so beautiful and calming the warm white paint and soft fabric details truly bring out the charm of the hutch while keeping that cozy cottage feel. I love how you honored its history while giving it new life. In a similar way, when businesses in Dubai refresh their spaces, they also need to take care of the practical side, like getting interior fit out approval to ensure everything meets local rules. Atech Interiors LLC helps clients secure interior fit out approval quickly and smoothly, making the process stress-free so they can focus on creating spaces that feel just as thoughtful and welcoming as yours.

  8. The secret, in my opinion, is simplicity and clarity. The app is free to download from https://xbets.pk/aviator/ the official website for Android and iOS devices. Everything is clear from the first try, the interface is simple, and the results of your actions are immediately visible. Plus, there’s a sense of control and transparency—nothing is overloaded with unnecessary details. That’s why many people enjoy coming back again and again: it’s convenient, fast, and enjoyable to use. I personally now use Aviator frequently precisely for this reason.
