We recently finished a year long remodel on a historic home in SW Washington State that covered three floors and an extensive deck in the back. While old drywall was being removed it was SO exciting to see old newspapers wrapped around the pipes with wire, and countless other discoveries while we worked.

Here is some of the beautiful woodwork on the main level in the grand dining room. Call me sentimental, but I could not help but think of the countless Christmas trees being put up in the home over the years, and many meals shared by generations of families in this lovely space.

I could write 100 posts on this beautiful vintage home, more than likely she will pop up from time to time as we continue to work with the owner on projects on the property.
I was happy to salvage a little cabinet that had been exposed to the elements for far too long on a covered porch. The cabinet was on the list of items to go, and being lovers of all things vintage, Troy and I were happy to put her in our KEEP pile.
The doors do not open on the front of the cabinet anymore but the top lifts up and I thought this would be perfect for more storage around our home.

I kept the wood finish for months and would walk by thinking she needed a makeover but inspiration had not struck quite yet.
Then, after we had cohabitated long enough, I had an idea.
She needed casters.
And while we were at it, a fresh coat of antique white paint.
I don’t always paint vintage pieces of furniture, but when the veneer on the top is damaged, I feel like paint can dramatically improve the life of the piece as well as bring out her beauty.

She has a little broken knob on one of the cabinet doors that don’t open anymore.
I am ok with that, sometimes things don’t need fixing right?
They are just meant to be.
So, up on the overturned 5 gallon buckets in our workspace she went, I am sure there is a much more fancy way to paint furniture but I take advantage of the decent weather outdoors while I can.
Two coats of what can only be described as a dreamy warm white paint Chiffon Cream by Rust-Oleum and I knew this was the perfect color to have used.

I found a set of four vintage style casters on Amazon, you can find them here, and sanded down all the rough edges until the little old cabinet was new again. Well, new old that is.
Which is even better if you ask me.

Here’s to second chances, old discarded furniture and romantics who can’t stand the thought of a shred of history going to waste.

I know it’s not even Halloween yet but I can already see a pretty Christmas vignette in the not so distant future for this new old cabinet.

Here are the some the newspaper and magazines we removed from the old pipes in the lower level of the home. Collier’s appeared to publish what reads like a soap opera, it’s no General Hospital but it does sound kind of intriguing…

And a little golf, all from 1933.
It’s hard to believe they are in the condition they are in behind old lath and plaster wrapped around pipes for 90 years!

I hope you are having the most cozy, wonderful Fall season ever my friend!

Thank you so much for reading, you have no idea how much your messages, comments and reading this little blog of mine mean to me 🙂
Stay cozy! xo Tanya

Your remodel journey and vintage finds are truly enchanting! I’m curious, what inspired you to choose ‘Chiffon Cream’ as the perfect paint color for your old cabinet makeover, and do you have any other vintage pieces waiting for their second chance in your beautiful historic home?
Hi Joy 🙂 you know that is a good question, I think I chose that color as it is slightly darker than our interior walls and I did not want the piece to get lost and blend in too much. There are always more projects in the hopper for sure! Hugs xx Tanya

It makes a piece of furniture so much more functional. (Especially heavy pieces of furniture). Thank you for sharing your post on the Home Imagined Link Party!

What a fascinating home renovation journey! Loving the idea of salvaging that old cabinet. It’s amazing how a little paint and some casters can transform a piece. I once had an old side table that looked rough, but a fresh coat of paint gave it new life. Did you consider adding some decorative elements to the cabinet too? Like stenciling or some cute knobs for the top? Can’t wait to see how it turns out in the end!
Loving the vintage cabinet rescue! The idea of adding casters and a fresh paint job is brilliant. Have you ever had a similar sentimental attachment to an old piece?

There’s something so satisfying about restoring furniture while honoring its history. Your approach really resonates with the way cupcakes 2048 lets players build on past moves to reach something beautiful and rewarding.
This post makes me appreciate the stories behind objects in our homes. Kind of like block blast, where each new level feels fresh but is built on the careful structure of what came before.
Thank you for showing us how to give an old cabinet a second chance!dlegames Your upcycling project is inspiring and a great example of sustainable design.
That’s so cool about finding old newspapers! I bet you’ve got tons of interesting photos from the remodel. It makes me think how handy something like an ai 3d studio would be to turn those discovery photos into detailed 3D models you could keep forever.
I truly enjoyed this post! The information is well-presented, insightful, and easy to follow. I appreciate your effort in creating content that is both engaging and highly valuable for readers.
