I have had a stack of these Dollar Tree rag rugs FOREVER.
They are in the “bin of conviction” (the things I HAD TO HAVE to make something cool then they sit for a long time)
Yeah, that bin.
Tell me I’m not the only one who may have more than one of these had-to-have-it stashes?
Oh good.
I have down-sized a bit over time but I am glad I have the stash of supplies that I have collected (yes, it’s an official collection of amazing stuff) because you never know when inspiration is going to STRIKE!
Yep, sometimes you get an itch to make something cool and there you are, lots of ideas and no supplies.
So, that is exactly what happened in this case.
I loved the colors of these small rag rugs so of course, I cleaned the store out however many months ago.
I have made pillows with them for our playroom a few years ago.

My kids use these too for “area rugs” when playing with toys and setting up a mock-room (this made me do a tiny happy dance when I saw them “decorating”) Novogratz, move over!
The Novogratz family (how did they get the kids to all stand/sit that long?) I am in awe…. we would have already had an injury and someone would undoubtedly be doing the I-have-to-pee-dance.
Here is what I used:
- Nine rag rugs from Dollar Tree- or any cheap+fabulous place you can find them
- Sturdy fabric for the backing to keep it stable (it doesn’t need to be exact -may use a few yards to mostly cover the back) twill, canvas etc…
- E6000 fuse for fabric
How to make your cheap+fabulous area rag rug:
- Begin by fusing your edges together row by row, you may need to let everything sit for a while until it is dry. I decided to let the fringe show instead of tucking it in and went opposite directions with each row.
- Turn the rug over and apply the piece of sturdy fabric to the pack with the fusing glue, make sure your fabric is cut 1 to 1 1/2 inches smaller than your finished rug so it does not stick out
- Press the fabric in place and allow it to dry following the instructions on the package
- DONE!
And that’s it!
If you want your area rag rug to be smaller, try using six or four instead of nine. Or make a longer row of them for a runner. The sky is the limit.

I like this colorful and sorta “Boho” rug. I like how. you let the fringed edges overlap. Very attractive! I actually made a tote bag for carrying books out of one of those rag rugs when I was in college. It lasted forever!
